چکیده

Introduction Imaging sequences reliant upon non-selective refocusing (e.g., 3D TSE, 3D GraSE, and 3D SE-EPI) widely employ either block/sinc refocusing pulses susceptible to field inhomogeneities or adiabatic pulses that demand high SAR. The aim of this work was to evaluate a sample of short, low-SAR, non-selective refocusing pulses by comparing signals acquired with a 3D SE-EPI sequence at 7 T. In reference to a 180° block pulse, all pulses result in overall signal gains with some pulses increasing signal by more than a factor of 2 in localized areas. SAR increases for all pulses are less than 2-fold with respect to the block pulse. This work thus demonstrates what signal improvements are possible under the condition that scan duration be minimally impacted and therefore aids high-field researchers and clinicians in choosing suitable refocusing pulses for practical 3D spin-echo imaging.

An Optimized Composite Refocusing Pulse for Ultra-High Field MRI

Purpose At high magnetic fields, the wavelengths of the RF pulses transmitted in MRI are comparable to the size of the human torso/head [1], which gives rise to inhomogeneous B1 fields. Variations of the RF field can be reduced (for example) by the use of tailored slice-selective pulses optimized for the desired excitation profile [2] based on spokes or an optimized composite pulse with slice s...

Selective Adiabatic Refocusing Pulse Train for Nonlinear Phase Dispersion and Flip Angle Error Compensation

Introduction: Adiabatic full passage (AFP) pulses are well known for their immunity to the B1 inhomogeneity [1], and have been applied in many areas of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and MRI, such as signal sensitivity enhancement and sharp volume boundary definition [2-4]. However, the application of selective AFP refocusing pulses has been limited by the inherent nonlinear phase disper...

Effect of Low Refocusing Angle in T1-Weighted Spin Echo and Fast Spin Echo MRI on Low-Contrast Detectability: A Comparative Phantom Study at 1.5 and 3 Tesla

MRI tissue contrast is not well preserved at high field. In this work, we used a phantom with known, intrinsic contrast (3.6%) for model tissue pairs to test the effects of low angle refocusing pulses and magnetization transfer from adjacent slices on intrinsic contrast at 1.5 and 3 Tesla. Only T1-weighted spin echo sequences were tested since for such sequences the contrast loss, tissue heatin...

Single-shot line scan imaging using stimulated echoes.

A new high-speed MRI method is described for single-shot line scan imaging (LSI) based on stimulated echoes (STE). To allow for multislice imaging, the technique comprises a series of slice-selective preparation pulses (each corresponding to the first RF pulse of a STE sequence), a slab-selective refocusing pulse (second RF pulse), and multiple line-selective read pulses (third RF pulses). An a...
